Situation
A Specialty Chemical Company was striving to maintain its double-digit growth and its leadership position in the North American alkoxylates, polysorbates, and sorbitan esters market. In order to attain its goal, the company realized that it needed to grow and upgrade its manufacturing assets. When reviewing their multi-site manufacturing operations, it was discovered that each manufacturing site was utilizing different laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and manufacturing information management and control systems (ERP/MES). The systems that were in place were found to be suboptimal which was affecting both quality and productivity. Also affecting productivity and the speed of batch production and release was the fact that the LIMS and ERP/MES were not integrated in any fashion.
